Damping in structures Damping is a significant source of energy dissipation in case of earthquakes. More than 50% energy is dissipated by the damping itself. Strain energy and inelastic energy are like 30% or so. Then there is stiffness proportional damping taking care of rest of the energy pumped into the system.
